| History The versatile, elegant, and stylish Fendi Designer handbag has made a strong impact on the world of fashion. Adele Casagrande, born in 1897, originally set up a leather and fur workshop in Rome, Edoardo Fendi (1925), and her workshop was renamed FENDI. They had 5 daughters who, after their father died, took over Fendi and and develop it. (Adele Casagrande Fendi died in 1978 when she was 81 years old). The first product line introduced by the 5 sisters was Furs (fur coats), for which they became very famous. In 1962, they called on Karl Lagerfeld to design new and different ways to use fur. They made it lighter and less cumbersome, softer and much more wearable. They continued to find new ways to treat fur, including tanning and dying, and created pieces out of hides that had never been used in the fashion industry. Lagerfeld also introduced their double F logo. Lagerfeld was soon creating accessories to go with their clothing collections. Most famous for the brand is the baguette handbag, which is named after the French loaf of bread, carried under the arm. The children of the 5 sisters have grown up in the business and created their own label, Fendissime, especially designed for the younger set. Fendi salons are now found in all major cities in the world including London, Paris, New York with headquarters in Rome. In 1999, Fendi sold 51% of their stock to a Prada/LVMH joint venture. Currently, LVMH owns the majority of the shares in Fendi. When you think of high fashion, Fendi will always be a name that comes to mind. |
