handbag was

Guccio Gucci, son of
a leather craftsman,
founded the Gucci
label in 1906 in
Florence, originally

storefront in Rome.

inspired by a saddle
girth. Other
trademark creations
from this period
included the leather
moccasin with a
metal bit, and various
shoes, ties, and bags.

Guccio’s sons,
Rodolpho, Aldo, Ugo,
and Vasco, joined
the company, and
they opened two
more shops in Italy.
Guccio passed away
in 1953, leaving the
House of Gucci to
Rodolpho and his
brothers.
The Gucci label
continued to grow
and thrive, with
celebrities such as
Audrey Hepburn,
Grace Kelly, and
even Jackie Kennedy
buying the Gucci
brand, and more
importantly, being
photographed
wearing it. The GG
logo was born around
this time, featuring
the initials of Guccio
Gucci.

In 1989, 50% of the
company was sold to
an investment
company from
Bahrain, and the
remaining 50% was
sold in 1993. The
label was renamed as
“Gucci Group”, and
Tom Ford became
their Creative
Director. He united
the brand and made
it profitable once
again. Gucci’s frilly
and flirty designs
were becoming the
“rage” on the fashion
runways. Handbags,
belts, shoes, and
men’s ties were also
still very popular with
fashion-conscious
consumers.

In 1995, Gucci
Group became a
publicly traded
company, and has
acquired a number of
other companies,
including Yves St.
Laurent, Sergio
Rossi, Bergeron,
Roger & Gallet,
Bottega Veneta,
Bedat & Co,
Alexander McQueen,
Stella McCartney,
and Balenciaga.

Gucci has continued
to be a strong force
in the world of
fashion. The in
vogue style of Gucci
fashions and
accessories, old and
new, will probably
always be desired by
the fashion conscious
consumer.
